Rishabh Pant Defends LSG Performance Despite Playoff Exit

A Season of Struggle for Lucknow

The 2026 Indian Premier League season has undeniably been a difficult journey for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With nine losses in 13 matches, the team has officially bowed out of the playoff race. However, amidst the disappointment, captain Rishabh Pant remains resolute, publicly standing by the quality and character of his squad.

Speaking after the team’s latest setback, Pant emphasized that their current standing on the points table does not reflect the underlying talent within the dressing room. “We are a very good team,” Pant remarked, addressing the narrative surrounding the side’s performance. “We are proud as a team regardless of how our situation is right now. You know, the kind of team we have, we know we can win this. Regardless of anything, we are confident enough as a team and as individuals. It hasn’t gone our way and everyone knows that, but that doesn’t take away the fact that we are a very good team.”

The Challenges in Execution

The struggles for LSG have been multifaceted. While the batting unit has faced scrutiny, even marquee players like Rishabh Pant himself and Nicholas Pooran have experienced uncharacteristic slumps in form. Mitchell Marsh, another key figure, finally found his rhythm with a century and a subsequent 96-run display, but his slow start to the tournament mirrored the team’s overall inconsistency.

Team director Tom Moody has been candid about the team’s shortcomings, pointing specifically to the middle-order’s failure to fire as a primary reason for their position in the bottom half of the table. The inability to sustain momentum, coupled with pressure situations, has often led to the team’s undoing.

Tactical Hurdles and Bowling Pressure

A prime example of these tactical difficulties was evident in the recent clash against the Rajasthan Royals. Despite a respectable batting effort that set a target of 221, the bowlers found themselves under immense pressure. The explosive opening duo of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi—who smashed 93 off just 38 balls—and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who contributed 43 off 23, effectively dismantled the LSG bowling attack.

Pant explained the immense difficulty of managing bowlers on flat tracks. “Sometimes it is hard,” he noted. “On a wicket like this, there is less margin for the bowlers, and just having too many suggestions doesn’t work. Sometimes you have to keep a simple plan and keep focusing on that one ball at a time and try to execute that plan.”

The dominance of the RR openers also restricted Pant’s tactical options. The rapid scoring rate forced the captain to hold back his specialist spinners, including left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed. Shahbaz only made an appearance in the final over when the game was already effectively decided. Pant explained the logic behind this decision: “Definitely, the left-handers had been batting for a period of time. And exposing a left-arm spinner, I didn’t want that, because Digvesh Rathi was in the side. So why take a chance on Shabby when Rathi is there, for sure.”

Looking Toward the Future

As LSG prepares for their final match of the season against the Punjab Kings, the focus has shifted from playoff calculations to pride and individual growth. For a team that entered the tournament with high expectations, the reflection period following this season will be critical. The management, including figures like Tom Moody, will need to assess the structural issues that plagued their middle order and the defensive vulnerabilities shown by their bowling attack.

Despite the numerical reality of their exit, Pant’s public backing of his players signals a desire to finish the season on a high note. By maintaining morale and keeping the focus on execution, the captain hopes to provide the fans with a positive ending to a turbulent campaign. The game against Punjab will serve as a testament to the team’s resilience and a building block for their aspirations in future editions of the IPL.
