Ruturaj Gaikwad Fined After CSK’s IPL 2026 Elimination Amid Slow Over-Rate Penalty

CSK’s IPL 2026 Campaign Ends in Disarray

Chennai Super Kings’ hopes of a record-extending ninth IPL title came to a crushing end on May 21, as they were dismantled by 89 runs by Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The loss not only sealed their elimination from IPL 2026 but also triggered disciplinary action from the BCCI, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad slapped with a hefty Rs 24 lakh fine.

A One-Sided Affair in Ahmedabad

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, CSK watched helplessly as Gujarat Titans’ top order unleashed a batting masterclass. Openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill laid a rock-solid foundation with a 125-run partnership, setting the tone early.

Sudharsan continued his stellar season, smashing 84 off just 53 balls, while Gill powered through with 64 off 37 at a blistering strike rate of 172.97. Jos Buttler then provided the finishing flourish, remaining unbeaten on 57 off 27 balls to propel Gujarat to a mammoth 229/4 in their 20 overs.

CSK Collapse in Chase

In response, CSK’s chase fell apart from the very first delivery. Sanju Samson was dismissed for a golden duck, edging Mohammed Siraj behind the stumps. The collapse continued as none of the batters, apart from Shivam Dube, managed to counter the Titans’ aggressive bowling attack.

Dube played a valiant 47 off just 17 balls, showcasing his power-hitting ability, but lacked support from the other end. The rest of the lineup crumbled under pressure, with Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan adding to the damage alongside Siraj.

CSK were eventually bowled out well short of the target, their campaign ending not just in defeat, but in disciplinary scrutiny.

BCCI Slams CSK With Over-Rate Fine

The disappointment was compounded the following day when the IPL announced sanctions against CSK for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. This marked their second such offence in the season, following an earlier incident against Delhi Capitals on April 11.

Under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, repeat offenders face financial penalties. As a result, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined Rs 24 lakh. The remaining members of the playing XI, including the impact player, were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees — whichever amount was lower.

The official IPL statement confirmed: “Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans… This was his team’s second offence of the season… Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs.”

What This Means for CSK

The fine adds financial strain to an already disheartening exit. CSK, known for their disciplined approach under MS Dhoni, have struggled to maintain momentum in IPL 2026. With Gaikwad still settling into full-time leadership, such lapses in on-field management raise questions about team strategy and timekeeping.

While the loss to Gujarat was expected to be a tight contest, the margin of defeat and the subsequent penalty underline a campaign that failed to live up to expectations.

What’s Next?

With Rishabh Pant‘s Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians also eliminated earlier, the playoff picture is now clearer. Gujarat Titans, riding high on form, remain strong contenders for the title.

For CSK, the focus will shift to introspection. As fans process the end of another season, the franchise must address both performance and procedural shortcomings ahead of IPL 2027.
